A step-by-step plan for migrating a website to a new host without downtime or lost email.
Looking for more detail? Our full guide covers this topic in depth, with step-by-step advice and sources.
Before you start
- Take a full backup of files and databases.
- Note your current DNS records, including email (MX), SPF and any verification records.
- Do not cancel your old hosting until the move is finished.
Step by step
- Set up the new hosting account and create the database.
- Upload your files and import the database. Many hosts offer a free migration tool or service.
- Update configuration files with the new database details.
- Test the site on the new host using a temporary URL or by editing your computer's hosts file.
- Lower the DNS time-to-live (TTL) a day before switching, so changes spread faster.
- Update DNS to point to the new host. Recreate email and other records exactly.
- Set up HTTPS on the new host.
- Check the site, forms, email and any payments.
After the move
- Keep the old hosting for a week or two in case you missed something.
- Check search console tools for errors.
- Download a final backup from the old host before you close it.
Moving the domain too?
Transferring a domain to a new registrar is separate from moving hosting. For .uk domains, you change the registrar tag (IPS tag) through your current registrar.
